Farm Fresh Eggs 101: Everything You Need to Know About Your Eggs đŸ„šđŸ“

One of my favorite things about running Suni-Bear Farms is watching someone crack open a farm fresh egg for the very first time. Usually, the first thing they notice is that rich golden yolk. Then come the questions

“Do these need to stay in the refrigerator?”

“Why are some eggs dirty?”

“What’s the difference between farm fresh and store-bought eggs?”

If you’ve ever wondered the same thing, you’re in the right place! Let’s talk all things farm fresh eggs.

đŸ„š Washed vs. Unwashed Eggs

When a hen lays an egg, she naturally coats it with something called the bloom (sometimes called the cuticle).

Think of the bloom as nature’s protective shield. It seals the tiny pores in the shell and helps keep bacteria out while locking moisture in.

Because of this natural coating:

Unwashed eggs

  • Keep their protective bloom.

  • Can safely be stored on the counter for several weeks in many home settings.

  • Typically last longer because the bloom is still intact.

Washed eggs

  • Have had the bloom removed during washing.

  • Should always be refrigerated.

  • Are still perfectly safe—they just need to stay cold since their natural protection has been washed away.

Here at Suni-Bear Farms, we leave our eggs unwashed so that natural bloom stays right where Mother Nature intended it to be. We recommend washing them just before you’re ready to use them.

đŸ§ș Counter or Refrigerator?

This is probably the most common egg question I hear.

If your eggs are unwashed, you have options! Thanks to the bloom, they can be safely stored on your kitchen counter in a cool, dry place.

If you choose to wash your eggs, they’ll need to go straight into the refrigerator.

One important tip: once you’ve refrigerated your eggs, it’s best to keep them refrigerated. Going back and forth between room temperature and the refrigerator can create condensation on the shell, which may make it easier for bacteria to move through the shell.

🚿 The Right Way to Wash Farm Fresh Eggs

When you’re ready to cook with your eggs, give them a quick wash.

Here’s how I do it:

  • Wash only the eggs you plan to use.

  • Use warm water—not cold.

  • Gently scrub away any dirt with your hand or a soft brush if needed.

  • Dry the eggs completely before cracking them.

Why warm water?

Cold water can actually cause the contents of the egg to contract slightly, potentially pulling bacteria through the shell’s tiny pores. Warm water helps avoid that.

Simple is best!

🌞 Why Farm Fresh Eggs Are So Special

There’s just something different about a farm fresh egg.

Many people notice:

  • Rich, deep golden-orange yolks.

  • Firmer whites.

  • Incredible fresh flavor.

  • Thick, sturdy shells.

  • Eggs laid just days—or even hours—before they reach your kitchen.

At Suni-Bear Farms, our hens spend their days scratching, exploring, dust bathing, and enjoying a balanced diet. Happy, healthy hens produce amazing eggs, and you can often see the difference the moment you crack one open.

🛒 Farm Fresh vs. Store-Bought Eggs

Both farm fresh and grocery store eggs can be nutritious, but there are a few differences.

Store-bought eggs are typically washed and sanitized before they’re sold, which removes the bloom. That’s why they must always be refrigerated.

Farm fresh eggs are often:

  • Less processed.

  • Collected daily.

  • Able to keep their natural bloom when left unwashed.

  • Often fresher by the time they reach your kitchen.

Depending on the hens’ diet and lifestyle, farm fresh eggs may also contain higher levels of certain nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins, along with those beautiful dark yolks many people love.

🍳 A Simple Farm Fresh Breakfast

One of my favorite ways to enjoy fresh eggs is also one of the easiest.

Farm Fresh Garden Scramble

Ingredients

  • 3 farm fresh eggs

  • A splash of milk (optional)

  • Salt and pepper

  • Fresh tomatoes

  • Bell peppers

  • Onion

  • Shredded cheddar cheese

  • Fresh herbs if you have them

Whisk the eggs together, pour them into a buttered skillet over medium heat, and gently scramble. Add your veggies, sprinkle on a little cheese, and cook until the eggs are just set.

Serve with buttered toast and fresh fruit for a breakfast that’s simple, wholesome, and full of farm-fresh flavor.
